So at 4 a.m. Piddly & I went jog-walking again for the first time in many months. I've been inactive physically and creatively for too long and am awfully out of shape (even worrying about a heart attack on the initial uphill leg), out of practice, and out of touch. But like a tuned-in Indian I looked for signs from the natural world and when a deer family crossed our path I took it as good. Then, at the very top of the hill, when the jaunty, optimistic song "Rover" by Jethro Tull started up in my earbuds, I saw it as a rallying point, a turnaround:
The long road is a rainbow
And the pot of gold lies there.
So slip the chain and I'm off again,
You'll find me everywhere
'Cause I'm a rover . . .
So it's a lucky Friday the 13th because I didn't die during my workout and have a fresh chance to wise up some and live better.
